Cơn giận – Temper – Song ngữ
Bankei Yōtaku (1622-1693)
A Zen student came to Bankei and complained: “Master, I have an ungovernable temper. How can I cure it?”
Một thiền sinh đến gặp ngài Bankei và than phiền: “Bạch thầy, tánh nóng giận của con không sao kiềm chế được. Con có thể làm gì để đối trị?”
“You have something very strange,” replied Bankei. “Let me see what you have.”
Thiền sư Bankei đáp: “Điều con nói đó thật lạ lùng! Hãy cho ta xem nào.”
“Just now I cannot show it to you,” replied the other.
“When can you show it to me?” asked Bankei.
“It arises unexpectedly,” replied the student.
Thiền sinh nói: “Nhưng ngay bây giờ con không thể chỉ cho thầy xem được.”
Thiền sư hỏi: “Thế đến lúc nào thì con có thể cho ta xem?”
Người thiền sinh trả lời: “Bạch thầy, nó nổi lên không sao biết trước được.”
“Then,” concluded Bankei, “it must not be your own true nature. If it were, you could show it to me at any time. When you were born you did not have it, and your parents did not give it to you. Think that over.”
Thiền sư Bankei kết luận: “Thế thì nó chắc chắn không phải là bản chất thực sự của con. Nếu là bản chất của con thì con sẽ có thể cho ta xem bất cứ lúc nào. Khi con sinh ra không có nó, và cha mẹ cũng chẳng trao nó cho con. Hãy nghĩ kỹ về điều đó.”
