69. Nuốt cả lỗi lầm - Eating the Blame – Song ngữ

“Zen master Fugai Ekun (1568-1664)”

Circumstances arose one day which delayed preparation of the dinner of a Soto Zen master, Fugai, and his followers. In haste the cook went to the garden with his curved knife and cut off the tops of green vegetables, chopped them together, and made soup, unaware that in his haste he had included a part of a snake in the vegetables.

Một hôm, việc chuẩn bị bữa trưa cho thiền sư Fugai thuộc phái Tào Động (Nhật) và các đệ tử của ngài bị chậm trễ vì có nhiều việc bất ngờ xảy ra. Vị tăng nấu bếp hối hả chạy ra vườn cầm liềm cắt vội những ngọn rau xanh, thái nhỏ và nấu món canh, không hề biết rằng trong lúc vội vàng ông đã vơ cả một phần con rắn vào trong bó rau.

The followers of Fugai thought they never had tasted such good soup. But when the master himself found the snake’s head in his bowl, he summoned the cook. “What is this?” he demanded, holding up the head of the snake.

Các đệ tử của ngài Fugai nghĩ là họ chưa bao giờ được ăn một bữa canh ngon đến thế! Nhưng khi chính vị thầy nhìn thấy cái đầu rắn trong bát mình, ngài liền gọi ngay vị tăng nấu bếp đến. Cầm cái đầu rắn đưa lên, ngài hỏi: “Cái gì đây?”

“Oh, thank you, master,” replied the cook, taking the morsel and eating it quickly.

“Ồ, con cảm ơn thầy.” Vị tăng đáp ngay và giật lấy cái đầu rắn nhanh chóng cho vào miệng nuốt mất.
