A Zen master named Gettan lived in the latter part of the Tokugawa era. He used to say: “There are three kinds of disciples: those who impart Zen to others, those who maintain the temples and shrines, and then there are the rice bags and the clothes-hangers.”
Thiền sư Gettan sống vào khoảng cuối thời đại Tokugawa đã từng nói rằng: “Có ba hạng đệ tử: một hạng có thể trao truyền thiền học cho người khác, một hạng chỉ lo được việc gìn giữ chùa chiền, và một hạng nữa chỉ là phường giá áo túi cơm.”
Gasan expressed the same idea. When he was studying under Tekisui, his teacher was very severe. Sometimes he even beat him. Other pupils would not stand this kind of teaching and quit.
Thiền sư Gasan cũng diễn đạt cùng một ý tưởng đó. Khi ngài theo học với thiền sư Tekisui, vị thầy này rất nghiêm khắc, thậm chí đôi khi còn đánh ngài. Nhiều thiền sinh khác không chịu được kiểu giáo huấn này và bỏ đi.
Gasan remained, saying: “A poor disciple utilizes a teacher’s influence. A fair disciple admires a teacher’s kindness. A good disciple grows strong under a teacher’s discipline.”
Ngài Gasan vẫn ở lại và nói: “Một đệ tử yếu kém chỉ biết dựa vào ảnh hưởng của thầy. Một đệ tử khá hơn thích được thầy chỉ dạy theo cách hiền từ. Một đệ tử giỏi sẽ lớn lên mạnh mẽ dưới sự nghiêm khắc của thầy.”
