Encho was a famous storyteller. His tales of love stirred the hearts of his listeners. When he narrated a story of war, it was as if the listeners themselves were on the field of battle.

Encho là một người nổi tiếng về nghệ thuật kể chuyện. Những câu chuyện tình của anh làm rung động trái tim người nghe. Khi anh kể chuyện về chiến tranh, người nghe cảm thấy như chính mình đang ở giữa bãi chiến trường.

One day Encho met Yamaoka Tesshu, a layman who had almost embraced master hood in Zen. “I understand,” said Yamaoka, “you are the best storyteller in our land and that you make people cry or laugh at will. Tell me my favorite story of the Peach Boy. When I was a little tot I used to sleep beside my mother, and she often related this legend. In the middle of the story, I would fall asleep. Tell it to me just as my mother did.”

Ngày kia, Encho gặp Yamaoka Tesshu, một cư sĩ hầu như đã đạt đến trình độ lão luyện về thiền. Yamaoka nói: “Tôi biết anh là người kể chuyện hay nhất nước, có thể tùy ý làm cho người nghe cười hay khóc theo câu chuyện của anh. Anh hãy kể tôi nghe câu chuyện cổ tích Cậu bé Trái đào mà tôi yêu thích nhất. Khi còn bé, tôi thường ngủ bên cạnh mẹ tôi, và bà thường kể câu chuyện cổ tích này. Tôi thường thiếp ngủ đi vào giữa chừng câu chuyện. Hãy kể tôi nghe theo cách giống như mẹ tôi đã kể.”

Encho dared not attempt to do this. He requested time to study. Several months later he went to Yamaoka and said: “Please give me the opportunity to tell you the story.”

“Some other day,” answered Yamaoka.

Encho không dám thử việc này. Anh xin một thời gian để nghiền ngẫm vấn đề. Mấy tháng sau, anh đến gặp Yamaoka và nói: “Xin cho phép tôi kể câu chuyện đó.”

Nhưng Yamaoka trả lời: “Hãy để hôm khác.”

Encho was keenly disappointed. He studied further and tried again. Yamaoka rejected him many times. When Encho would start to talk Yamaoka would stop him, saying: “You are not yet like my mother.”

Encho hết sức thất vọng. Anh ta tiếp tục nghiền ngẫm thêm về câu chuyện và thử một lần nữa. Yamaoka từ chối anh nhiều lần. Mỗi khi Encho sắp bắt đầu kể chuyện thì Yamaoka thường ngăn lại và nói: “Anh vẫn chưa được giống như mẹ tôi.”

It took Encho five years to be able to tell Yamaoka the legend as his mother had told it to him.

In this way, Yamaoka imparted Zen to Encho.

Encho phải mất đến 5 năm mới có thể kể câu chuyện cổ tích ấy giống như người mẹ Yamaoka đã kể trước đây.

Bằng cách này, Yamaoka đã truyền dạy thiền cho Encho.
